 Black folks like to run, jump and shoot a basketball, but they can't even float in water...or so the stereotype goes.
Well, don't believe it, because the film PRIDE dispels that myth. So, if you don't have anything to do some evening and would like to watch an uplifting and entertaining video, head over to your local rental store and grab this 2007 release off the shelf. It stars academy award nominee Terrence Howard and was directed by Sunu Gonera. The screenplay is by a group of writers, principally Kevin Michael Smith.
Like THE GREAT DEBATERS, the film I last reviewed, PRIDE is based on a true story. Also like THE GREAT DEBATERS, PRIDE is about African American young people and their Black mentor defying the odds and busting up a limiting stereotype. But instead of debate, PRIDE is about swimming.
However, don't make the mistake of thinking PRIDE is just DEBATERS in water. It's not. Unlike THE GREAT DEBATERS, PRIDE is not set in the refined atmosphere of a Black college campus, but takes place on the mean streets of Philadelphia.
Howard plays Jim Ellis, the real-life swim coach who molded a rag-tag group of street kids with raw talent into a champion swim team, while teaching them life's lessons at the same time.
Now, for the sake of full-disclosure, I have to admit that PRIDE has its flaws that further separate it from THE GREAT DEBATERS: Simply, it does not have the strong writing and direction of DEBATERS as it gravitates between rough-edged scenes and fantasy. However, PRIDE is a compelling story that receives its power from fine performances by Howard, as well as Nate Parker and Kimberly Elise, both who starred as team members in THE GREAT DEBATERS. Comic relief is provided by Bernie Mac, and a surprisingly effective Tom Arnold plays a racist swim coach.
A back story adds to the drama of the swim sequences, as the stumbling block of fighting to resurrect a dilapidated recreation center against the opposition of city hall has to be overcome at the same time the coach is trying to patch together a decent team.
Eight mm. film clips of the actual Jim Ellis and his team close out the picture, giving it a stamp of authenticity.
Although PRIDE received mixed reviews from critics, it continues to receive high marks by renters of the film, and is just the sort of movie that can make a person feel like they haven't wasted an evening.
From my perspective, the importance of this film is that it furthers the mission of Human Relations Associates--to dispel stereotypes.
Finally, a note of caution--and a little trivia.

The trivia: Diana Ross's son, Evan Ross, appears in PRIDE, as does Clint Eastwood's boy, Scott Reeves.
